Because they want to sell their at profit consoles with an OS entirely controlled by them (ie adds in dashboard).

And something something PC piracy is higher than console piracy. And consoles tend to pay full price for games, whereas PC are more likely to hunt sales.

Yea, except this is all especially for PC gamers, the same people that pirate games or seek deals... A console gamer isn't going to make the switch to PC because a PC is much more expensive than the console is and a PC gamer is generally unwilling to make the switch to console because its like going backwards. Also, if I'm not mistaken, console sales are a profit loss and the game sales are the profit gain. IIRC, the big deal with the consoles this time around was that they are finally at a point where they're starting to break even on the console sales.

EDIT: My point is that they're trying to bring these 2 platforms together, but if you own both platforms, you have basically wasted money on a redundant product.

This generation is @ profit consoles. Hasn't been that way outside of Nintendo. It's why this gen is particularly bad.

Still hype your exclusives (many Xbox games are still console exclusive) to being playable on PC***** with an Xbox.

Sell some more consoles for now (especially since xbone is still behind ps4 iirc) with your new PC feature.

Then once you milk those idiots, unlock the software and unify the systems. Can't skip the milking the idiots step though.

A huge chunk of SOE is sitting in an assembly room getting laid off as I type this, from Exec's to QA Testers. I don't personally know anyone deeply involved with EQ Next, so I have no idea what this means for that game, but so far a lot of EQ1 and EQ2 developers are getting the boot, and there weren't very many left to begin with.

Any insider news of their goals with these layoffs?

Not sure the insiders even have information themselves on that yet. The new board has hired people, I guess you'd call them "Efficiency Consultants," or some kind of jackass title like that where they have just been going over people, their roles and shit, and then either firing them or not. They're pretty much auditing the entire company.

At this point, I'm pretty much just going with the assumption that the EQ franchise is dead.

This is office space for sure. Who's gonna be the bad ass that speaks his mind and knocks walls over? We may never know, but if a developer tweets that "damn it feels good to be a gangster" then we'll know.
